Félix and Meira is a story of an unconventional romance between two people living vastly different realities mere blocks away from one another. This unexpected and unconventional love story starts off with the most random of encounters when Felix a perpetual womaniser cannot stop himself hitting up the sad looking attractive Hassidic woman waiting with her baby to pick up her food order in a delicatessen. Meira (Yaron), a young Hasidic housewife and mother, and Félix (Martin Dubreuil), a man lost in mourning the recent death of his father, unexpectedly meet at a local bakery in Montreal’s Mile End district. That pretty sums up from where both of these characters are coming, except for them sharing the common interest of drawing. In this moving romantic drama set in Montreal, a grieving loner falls in love with a married Hasidic Jewish woman with a young son. In one of the scenes, Felix surprisingly asks how does it feel to have children, and obedient Jewish Meira quite amusingly asks felix how does it feel to be single. "Félix et Meira is a timely reminder that there are different kinds of rights to freedom — the right to maintain long-held religious traditions, and the right to choose one's own identity" (Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo, Toronto International Film Festival). Back to my initial statement about how I thought at first that my problem with "Felix and Meira" was a cultural one. One of the reasons I was able to dismiss that notion was because I remembered a movie that dealt with the Hasidic community that I really did like from a couple of years ago entitled "Fill the Void."
